Chapter 18
The swearing coming from the medical bay was second only to the laughter. Alvola was tempted to follow the sounds and find out what was going on. Instead, he checked their flight path again and was relieved to find that they'd gotten out of the ring of debris around the planet and away from the actively searching satellites. While the shuttles bafflers were good, there hadn't been anyway to guarantee they wouldn't trigger an alert if one of the satellites had gotten lucky.
There were only a couple hours left to get to the ship and then they could offload their cargo and begin the process of wooing their mates. He sent a message to the ship so the docking bay would be prepped when they got there and a crew would be available to move the cargo. Another message was sent directly to Mintonar to come and collect his son when they arrived.
Finally, he announced they were beginning their approach to the ship and everybody who wasn't on the bridge needed to start prepping to dock and disembark. It would take most of the rest of their time to get everything stowed for landing and finish prepping all the humans. He was listening for Mindy to come out of the med bay when the Prince strode through the bridge without a word, an unfamiliar woman in his arms.
"Was he-" Chaegar asked.
"Pants, no shirt, girl wearing his jacket," Alvola said, his eyes focused on the screens in front of him.
"Barefoot?" Chaegar asked.
"I didn't look," Alvola said with a shake of his head.
"Socks," Captain Cretus said behind them. "Her, too."
"Explains why he was so quiet," Alvola said with a raised eyebrow.
"Is that-" Chaegar stopped talking, obviously trying to figure out how to ask his question without insulting the Prince or the head doctor.
"Officer's quarters are sound-proofed," Captain Cretus said, saving him from floundering. "Though I seriously doubt they got that far in such a short amount of time."
"She looked like she was asleep," Alvola acknowledged. "And it was late at night when we left. She was probably tired."
Chaegar looked skeptical but let it drop.
"If a girl comes in from the engine room, we're going to have to have a discussion about abducting human women," Captain Cretus said.
"What, how to do it properly?" Alvola said with a laugh.
"There are four of them aboard this shuttle," the Captain said. "That many women go missing at once, someone is going to take notice."
"Well, only one of them was really brought on board against her will," Alvola pointed out. "And she was supposed to be, anyway. I don't think she'll be considered missing for a while. Oh, the Commander might, though."
"Commander?" Captain Cretus asked.
"Damina's mate," Alvola said, turning to glance at his captain.
"Damina's-" the Captain started then shook his head. "Five humans, then, and apparently the men are as compatible as the women. People are going to notice."
"They were going to notice eventually," Alvola pointed out. "In fact, we want them to notice, don't we?"
"There are better ways to open negotiations than stealing their women," the Captain said.
